Niswander Environmental (NE) partnered with Holland Engineering (HEI) to conduct a mussel survey in the Huron River in preparation for a culvert replacement project. The existing, structurally deficient culvert posed a safety hazard to the traveling public. Following the Michigan Freshwater Mussel Survey Protocols and Relocation procedures, NE and HEI utilized SCUBA in deep areas and snorkeling in shallow areas to survey the project location for mussels. Six species of mussels were collected, including two state special concern species as well as the state threated wavy-rayed lampmussel. All mussels found were tagged and relocated to an approved relocation site in order to protect the population prior to construction.
